CHAPTER 8

We arrive in San Francisco at exactly ten o’clock a.m. local time to clear and sunny skies. Still disoriented from the change in altitude and unsure how we will proceed now that we have arrived, we disembark from the knowledge that I will soon be participating in what will be one of the most anticipated events in gaming history.

“How are you feeling?” Leon asks.

“A bit sick,” I reply.

“From the plane, or…”

I don’t know how to respond. A part of me wants to confirm that I am nervous, which I feel he is implying, but another knows that doing so will only serve to fuel his nerves. Because of that, I simply nod, and say, “Yeah. I… I think it’s from the plane.”

“We are at a different altitude,” he offers as we continue to walk down the long corridor leading out from our gate. “Speaking of which: did whoever you spoke to at Kingsman say where we were going? Or if anyone was picking us up?”

“He said the competition would be held at the Kingsman Online International Headquarters. As to where we are staying until then…” I frown. “I’m not sure.”

“I guess we’re getting a hotel, then?”

“I guess,” I say, then stop as we exit out the passage that leads out to the tarmac.

A man, dressed similarly to how Victor Crew was in Texas, stands in the lobby, holding a sign that simply says Sophia Garza. A glittering crown decorates his right breast.

“There’s our escort,” Leon says, matter-of-factly.

The man nods as we approach. “I assume you are Miss Garza?” he asks. “And this is your plus one?”

“Yes, sir,” I reply. “I’m her.”

“My name is Nathaniel Dawson. I will be your contact here in San Francisco, and your escort to and from the hotel Kingsman Online has placed you in.”

“All right.”

“Please, follow me.”

The man disposes of the handwritten sign in a garbage can at the edge of the gateway and begins to lead us through the airport at an astounding speed. How he could have familiarized himself with such a large space I cannot be certain, but as we walk, quickly and surely making our way through it, I find myself dwelling on the competition that is soon to take place.

You have two days, I think, to recover.

Then I will be back in the world of Dystopia and fighting for my future as I know it.

The thought causes me to feel physically uncomfortable. A headache brews. My stomach twists. My chest feels hot and heavy. A panic attack blooms, and try as I may, I can’t help but inhale a deep gulp of fresh air.

“Hey,” Leon says. “Are you—”

He is cut off by the sound of Mr. Dawson’s voice as the man says, “Stay close. We don’t want to get separated.”

“What’re you—” I start.

We pass through a glass divider that separates us from the security checkpoint—

Only to find hundreds of people are within the airport.

“Is this—” I begin once more.

“A spaceport?” Nathaniel Dawson asks. “No. It isn’t. But it flies to one in Los Angeles.
